Monthly Retrospective: October 2024

I spent much of October “convalescing in the countryside,” as I jokingly called it, on an extended visit to family in rural Massachusetts. From there, I did some job interviews in the city and wound up getting a job! I still have some business to take care of back in Vancouver, but very soon I will be back in Massachusetts to stay, and for many reasons I am feeling better about that than I felt about my attempt to move. I just love this landscape and I can’t explain it.

Luckily, I stayed in a guest room with a big desk, so I was able to get lots of painting done. Here are all my month’s paintings by topic.

Autumn Trees

It being October, the best month in the best state, I of course had to do some foliage painting! I struggled with trees in the first half of the month but I feel like something suddenly clicked toward the end.

Skies, Clouds, Auroras

I went back to my project of painting my own old sky/sunset/nature photos, including several of Danehy Park – something I was too homesick to do while in Vancouver. The fantastic aurora in early October inspired a painting, and I also went back and painted another aurora I saw in Vancouver in September.

Birds

I added a bunch of entries to my birds project!

Sketches

I did a bit of outdoor sketching on nice days.
