I’ve loved Daniel Smith’s Phthalo Turquoise since my first palette; unmixed, it’s just about my favorite color of teal. I don’t use it too much these days, though, for a few reasons:
- It is a mix of Phthalo Blue and Phthalo Green, which is easy enough to mix yourself.
- It’s kind of not as useful as either a green or a blue.
However, the advent calendar is all about not worrying about that and finding an excuse to paint with it anyway!
I painted hydrangeas!

It’s funny because I can’t actually see much turquoise in this. I did a bunch of mixing:
- PT + Nickel Azo Yellow for greens
- PT + Quin Red (PV19) or Cobalt Violet (PV14) for dull blues/violets
- PT + Venetian Red for dark background green-blacks
Here’s the reference photo, which is one of mine. I landed on it in my photo library after realizing that I needed a color scheme which could contain bright greens, but only dull blues.
