My thoughts
Necessary slot? Yes. As a primary color (with yellow and magenta), cyan is one of my top three mixers. I like to use cyan colors to mix greens; they’re also no slouch at mixing violets.
Favorites: I go for a Phthalo every time because they have a wide value range, high tinting strength, high transparency, everything I look for in a mixer. Phthalo Turquoise is one of my favorites because it gets really dark but doesn’t look lugubrious, and mixes great greens.
Some of the colors listed here are more “bonus colors” than colors that can carry the job of a primary cyan; among them I’d list the ones that don’t get very dark, such as Cerulean Blue, Manganese Blue, Cobalt Turquoise, and mixed pastels.
